Recommended Book: A Boy, A Dog and a Frog by Mercer Mayer

A Boy, A Dog and a Frog, is one of the Reading Kingdom’s recommended books for kids. Reading expert and Reading Kingdom creator, Dr. Marion Blank explains why.

Mercer Mayer, an award winning writer, describes his books as being about “things that happened to me when I was a little kid.” His ability to capture the thoughts and feelings of young children is astounding. In this wordless book (a genre that contains solely illustrations and no text), he tells an enticing story of friendship. At the outset, the boy, helped by his dog, aims to capture a frog; by the end, there is a surprising, joy-filled turnaround where they are all friends.

Parents, of course, can “read” this to children. Equally important, preschoolers can read this to parents and become active story tellers at a young age.
