Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott Dell, is one of the Reading Kingdom’s recommended reading for kids. Reading expert and Reading Kingdom creator, Dr. Marion Blank explains why:
One of the huge payoffs of novels is their ability to take us to worlds that are far beyond the one we know.
Island of the Blue Dolphins is a superb example of this. Based on a true event, the book tells the story of a teenaged girl and her 7-year-old brother who have been left behind by their tribe. As a result, they spend their days stranded on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. Their story of survival is filled with adventure and mystery that will appeal to children from fourth grade on up.
