Recommended Reading for Kids: The Sign of the Beaver

Sign of the Beaver book

The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare, is one of the Reading Kingdom’s recommended reading for kids. Reading expert and Reading Kingdom creator, Dr. Marion Blank explains why:

In this book, a family is settling into a new homestead on the frontier. The father has to return East to bring back his mother, sister, and newborn baby and Matt, a boy just entering his teens, has the responsibility to care for the place while he is gone. The challenges are formidable and almost unmanageable until Matt meets two Native Americans, Attean and his grandfather. Through their guidance Matt learns the ways of the wilderness, along with bridging the cultural gap between them. This is a compelling story with wonderful characters.
