Reading Kingdom, the innovative online reading program and reading game for kids, wins Mom’s Choice Award

Reading Kingdom wins Moms Choice Award

We’re thrilled to have won a Mom’s Choice Award! Here’s the announcement.

April 17, 2012 – The Mom’s Choice Awards has honored Reading Kingdom as being among the best in family-friendly products. Reading Kingdom is a patented, online program that offers research based, adaptive reading and writing programs and reading games for kids.

The Mom’s Choice Awards is an international awards program that recognizes inventors and companies for their efforts in creating quality, family-friendly products and services. Parents, educators, librarians and retailers look for the Mom’s Choice Awards seal of approval when selecting quality materials for children and families. An esteemed panel of judges are bound by a strict code of ethics which ensures expert and objective analysis free from any manufacturer association. The evaluation process scores entries on a number of elements including production quality, design, educational value, entertainment value, originality, appeal and cost. The result is a list of the best in family-friendly products that parents and educators can feel confident in using.

In accepting the award, Reading Kingdom CEO, Jonathan Blank, noted “Reading Kingdom is the best reading program available, and it is gratifying to receive this acknowledgment.”

Reading is the most important skill a child will ever learn. But government figures show that only 35% of children are reading at a proficient level while a staggering 35% are failing. Until now, educators relied almost exclusively on phonics and whole language to teach reading – both of which have significant problems that make failure inevitable for many children. Reading Kingdom, on the other hand, offers a new 6 skill model of reading instruction that incorporates the best parts of phonics and whole language while teaching additional skills that make reading and writing success inevitable for every child!

About Reading Kingdom: Reading Kingdom is a fun, easy-to-use online reading program that teaches children 4-10 years old how to read and write to a third grade level. The program is based on the groundbreaking work of Dr. Marion Blank, Director of the Light on Learning Program at Columbia University. It is the only program available that teaches all six skills children need to learn how to read and write. For more information please visit www.ReadingKingdom.com

We’ve just improved your favorite online reading program!

We’re pleased to announce some great new features available in Reading Kingdom!

Now, when you log in, you have the choice to type using either an on-screen keyboard (where keys are selected with a mouse) or a regular physical keyboard attached to your computer.

We added the on-screen keyboard because it can be easier for young children to use, instead of having to use a physical keyboard.

(Remember that we recommend using an external standard or over-sized mouse rather than an optical track-pad, track-ball or other mouse/pointing device.) Also, for all our foreign subscribers, you no longer have to worry about the variations between different countries’ keyboards. You can switch your typing method at any time. Also, if you have an Android or Windows tablet, you can use the new on-screen keyboard with that tablet.

In addition we want to call your attention to a number of options that are available under the “PARENTS & TEACHERS” link in the left side navigation (in the green bar on the left side of the screen when you log in). When you scroll down on the “My account” (Account Details) page you will see a number of options including the option to “Increase Response Time” which you can use to increase the amount of time a child is given to respond to the program prompts before the program determines that no response has been provided.

We continue to update and upgrade our program based on your feedback and input. If you have any comments or suggestions, please contact us.

And thank you for being part of the Reading Kingdom!

An Interview with the Reading Kingdom Owl!

If you’re familiar with Reading Kingdom, you’ve probably seen our Mascot Owl flying around the website. What you may not have known is that the Owl’s name is Lingo. Recently, the team here at Reading Kingdom took a flight with Lingo to ask a few questions about Lingo’s life and what it’s like to be the Reading Kingdom Owl. home-school, great children's books, children's learning software, books for kids, how to teach children to read, how to get kids to read, Literacy program for kids, best online literacy program for kids

RK: Hi Lingo, we’re glad to have caught up with you!

Lingo: Yes, It’s great to see you too!

RK: Tell us a bit about yourself and how you ended up perching at the Reading Kingdom.

Lingo: I love to fly around the forest at night, perching from tree to tree with my friends. My favorite activities are being a night owl and reading great children’s books. One night while flying around as a young owl, I saw a magical land called the Reading Kingdom. I flew in, fell in love and have been here ever since!home-school, great children's books, children's learning software, books for kids, how to teach children to read, how to get kids to read, Literacy program

RK: We love children’s books too! Do you have a favorite book?

Lingo: One of my favorites is The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne.

RK: What is your favorite part of your job as the Reading Kingdom Owl?

Lingo: It’s easy for me to love my job at Reading Kingdom. Nothing brings a smile to my face quicker than watching children learn how to read and write well and having fun in the process. There is a lot of room for improvement in children’s literacy. Roughly two out of five children are having real trouble learning to read – that’s way too many kids for our founder, Dr. Marion Blank to let fall to the way side. I love perching on her shoulder while she tells me about the six skills Reading Kingdom is using to propel children’s literacy success!

RK: What can you tell us about your family tree?

Lingo: Well, my lineage has come from a long line of family friendly Owls! Our flock has spread their “t-owl-ent” in many positive ways, but I am the first owl in the family to have a love for literacy!

RK: Do owls listen to music as well as read?

Lingo: We sure do! My favorite band is “Hootie and the Blowfish”!

RK: Since becoming the mascot for Reading Kingdom you’ve become quite a celebrity! We always see you flying around, bringing smiles to our office and in the Reading Kingdom community. What’s it like to be part of Reading Kingdom?

Lingo: Hoo, me? I’m having such a hoot at Reading Kingdom that I didn’t even think about it! I’m humbled to be a part of Reading Kingdom and couldn’t think of a better place to be than watching children learn every day. When I’m not flying around the Reading Kingdom sharing my wisdom, I love chatting to parents, teachers and homeschoolers about children’s books and learning how to read at the Pre-school, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade levels. You can always find me tweeting (which I think they should call hooting) about Children’s books and literacy on Twitter and one of my other favorite spots, Facebeak. ;)

RK: There’s a rumor flying around that you have a special gift for everyone who reads this! Is it true?

Lingo: It sure is! I want to show everyone out there that reading can be both educational AND fun! Watch the magic at Reading Kingdom, with educational activities for children as well as lesson plans and fun books for kids to read. If Reading Kingdom sounds like as much fun for your kids as it is for me, here’s a FREE month of the only children’s learning program that uses all six skills to bring your children literacy success – Sign up now :) I’ll see you soon!

We’re Sweet on Books: introducing the two Melissas

The Reading Kingdom team is proud to introduce you to the two Melissas! These moms are the creators of Sweet on Books, the stellar children’s book review site. We love their reviews and are thrilled to have them join us as weekly contributors to the Great Books for Kids feature on our blog.

The two Melissas live in a small town outside of New York City and have five children between their two families. Melissa Young was a teacher of grades K-5 and specialized in literacy. She has an Elementary Education Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, CA. Melissa Gaynor has worked in advertising and marketing and has an MBA from Columbia University. Their children and a shared passion for children’s books brought them together as friends and business partners.  Voracious readers with dreams of opening a children’s book store, they parlayed their passions into creating Sweet on Books and establishing themselves as two of the leading children’s book reviewers on the web.

Please welcome Melissa Gaynor and Melissa Young to the Reading Kingdom team!
