We’ve talked before about how to keep kids safe online.  Lingo flies all over the internet to find ways to keep children safe online and that’s why the site Lingo likes this week is KidRex.

Here’s more about them from their website:

“KidRex is a fun and safe search for kids, by kids! KidRex searches emphasize kid-related webpages from across the entire web and are powered by Google Custom Search™ and use Google SafeSearch™ technology.

Google’s SafeSearch™ screens for sites that contain explicit sexual content and deletes them from your child’s search results. Google’s filter uses advanced technology to check keywords, phrases, and URLs. No filter is 100 percent accurate, but SafeSearch™ should eliminate most inappropriate material.

In addition to Google SafeSearch™, KidRex maintains its own database of inappropriate websites and keywords. KidRex researchers test KidRex daily to ensure that you and your child have the best web experience possible.”

Reading Kingdom is another great place to keep children safe online.  Our online reading program and game is Safe-Surf rated and ad-free, providing a safe learning environment for children that puts parents’ minds to rest.  Get started at Reading Kingdom with a free 30 day trial – click here.  Lingo and company hope to see you soon!

Fight bullying at school… with color!

fight-bullying-at-school
Bullying at school is an issue that has ensued for many years. Luckily, advocates against bullying are changing the landscape of aggression in schools to bring about increased equality and reduced bullying through educational activities, self-esteem and more. Our friends at Timbuktu explain how bullying at school can be reduced… with color!

“Can colors affect the developing brain and be used to teach tolerance? The Color Coalition thinks so.

Winner of the Color in Action Award by Pantone and Academy of Art University, the project is the result of a research based on the psychological effects of colors, with particular focus on their impact at a young age and on how they can be used to teach tolerance and lower aggression.

Starting with a work against bullying where kids worked with colored tiles, the Color Coalition developed a manual to help teachers and educators understand how colors can make schools a more positive environment and how they can be used “as a tool for enhancing the school environment, building community, and embracing diversity.”

At the moment, the Color Coalition mainly recommends what colors each school environment should be decorated with according to its function, but future steps will go much beyond that, with a site aimed at ending bullying through color-based online activities.
We look forward to seeing how the idea develops, but we sure like the idea of colors as a powerful anti-bullying weapon!”

While bullying at school is being reduced and eliminated, we’re also showing you how to keep your kids safe from online bullies. See how our safe online learning environment can reduce bullying and simultaneously keep your kids safe online while learning to read. Sign up for a free 30 day trial today!

Why Your Reading Curriculum Should Take a Personalized Approach to Learning

preschool reading curriculum, what-can-you-teach-a- preschooler, can preschoolers read,About Our Online Reading Program, classroom curriculum, customized reading software for kids, education, Interactive online reading program for kids, Kids Learning Websites, Reading for Kids and Kids Learning Websites, reading kingdom reviews, teaching materials

If you’re looking for an elementary, kindergarten or preschool reading curriculum, or a homeschooling curriculum, you should seriously consider choosing a reading curriculum that customizes itself to your child.

Kids skills vary enormously

A reading lesson for one child can be totally inappropriate for another. Imagine a reading lesson on the “silent e” rule where some kids in the class have known this rule for months, or even years (so they are bored) and other kids cannot understand the concept of a “rule.” The former group of kids will be bored and the latter will be confused.

That’s why teachers typically divide their classes into groups. But even in a group of 4 or 5, children’s skills can vary enormously.

To combat this problem, teachers separate their classes into groups and then only have a limited time to devote to each group

Plus, most of the day in school is then taken up with reading as the teacher has to give 20-30 minutes to each group. The result? Little else gets taught! (THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM.)

In this day and age, there is no reason for any of the above

Computers can offer highly individualized programs where

• The material is just right for each child
• The child does not have to waste time (and feel bored) listening to material that is not relevant to him or her
• The child receives immediate feedback if he is right or wrong

The benefits of learning to read with an online customized reading program are endless and the disadvantages are none!

The Reading Kingdom online reading program and game fully customizes itself to your child and has helped thousands of children learn to read and write to a third grade level. It’s an ideal preschool reading curriculum or homeschooling curriculum. Sign up for a 30 day free trial today.
