Our Approach

The Reading Kingdom is based on a reading system developed by Dr. Marion Blank, an award-winning psychologist from Columbia University and a world-renowned authority on how children learn to read. Dr. Blank has used her innovative methods to help thousands of children learn to read.

Stephen Colbert explains why phonics alone won't work

Overview

Current reading systems typically rely on a phonics approach wherein reading is a process of linking letters to the sounds they make. That's why children, at the start of school, for generations, have been taught to sound out the ABC's.

It's great to be able to figure out the sounds of words, but by itself, it is not enough. For a start, it makes reading unbearably slow and tedious. At some point, sounding out has to switch over to instant word recognition. That means doing what you are doing now looking at words and immediately recognizing what they are saying. That, in turn, requires a set of visual skills that are almost never taught.

The weaknesses of phonics only have long plagued reading instruction. It's one of the reasons why whole language was introduced some years ago. Focusing, not on words, but on the content of books, its aim has been to get children to comprehend and enjoy the messages on the printed page.

But that too is not enough. In fact, success in reading calls upon six essential areas. Without them, children are often left confused and ill equipped to read.
