More Moms Love the Reading Kingdom
Each week, we’re featuring reviews of moms part of The Old Schoolhouse magazine’s review crew who are using the Reading Kingdom with their children. The crew was offered a free year subscription of the Reading Kingdom program to help us spread the word about the program. Click the their names to visit their blogs, and be sure to follow our Reading Kingdom Twitter list featuring some of our homeschooling parents.
“My homeschooler is, by age, older than the targeted age range, yet she falls within the developmental range for the product, and I asked if we could give it a try. I’m glad we did; Reading Kingdom has a lot of the right components that make it very friendly for a child who can shut down with anxiety when a resource is too busy or feels too challenging.” Penny Ray
“My girls enjoyed doing the lessons….It’s a colorful program with cute characters. The lessons are brief and they could pause them once during their lesson for 12 minutes if needed. It progressed them based on their personal skill level. They did not have to type words they already knew. They learned to type, read and spell common words for beginner readers. …I will definitely use RK as a supplement to our homeschool curriculum. I think it has taught the girls how to read, spell and type words that are very commonly used in their readers.”

“At first, my son didn’t pay close attention to the letters (much like he doesn’t in his reading) but after missing quite a few questions, he has learned to look at ALL the letters in the word before answering. This is important for his reading, because my son often makes the mistake of looking at the first few letters and then just saying a word, which is often incorrect (example: misreads “these” for “then” or “there”). I have frequently tried to get him to slow down when we are reading together, and have even made him point to a word letter by letter to really make him look at it, but that usually ends with both of us being angry. I can say that after using Reading Kingdom for a while, I am noticing that during his oral reading, he is paying more attention to the words, which is a big improvement!!… For a parent with a struggling reader who hates to read but still needs to practice, I would recommend Reading Kingdom.” Brandy Brockhausen
“Ds asks me daily to play!…I was extremely pleased that my ds6 gained fine motor skills while “playing” this on-line reading program. We rarely allow video game time, so this program is a true delight for my ds. Conveniently, I only had to monitor 1 session to assure that ds was catching on and understanding the mechanics of the program. My ds6 is reading on a first grade level, but it took several weeks for him to excel the keyboard and mouse training section which is imperative to successfully utilize the program. Be prepared for your child to spend many sessions or even weeks mastering the keyboard and mouse training before moving on to the different sessions. However, this never hindered or discouraged my child. The short sessions kept my busy student interested and eager to start a new session.” Jill Craft
“We began using Reading Kingdom in mid-January. She went from struggling to read ONE phonics reader (the controlled kind with generally 1 sentence of 4-6 words per page) to pulling books off the shelf to scan for words she now knows. Several times a day I hear “look mom! I found ’some’.” Or “Look ‘bird’.” And just this week she and sat on the couch and she read 3 of those little readers. 3!! Her confidence has increased 1000% and words that she struggled to sound out are nearly fluent and through Reading Kingdom she has learned to read words such as boy, girl, bird, here, rest, some, are, is, the, plane, jump, swim and many more.”Tess Hamre
