Lily’s Crossing by Patricia Reilly Giff, is one of the Reading Kingdom’s recommended reading for kids. Reading expert and Reading Kingdom creator, Dr. Marion Blank explains why:
This is a lovely story of growing up, and the power that friendships play in helping us cope with the problems that life presents. Set in World War II, the story follows Lily, a girl who lost her mother when she was very young. Now her father is leaving her to go to the army and her only friend is leaving to move with her family to a factory town. Then Lily meets Albert, a refugee from Hungary, and they form a special bond that transforms Lily’s life.
This is the sort of book that raises a host of meaningful issues for children nine years and older.
